ABOUT LOWER CHILVERTON
Lower Chilverton is an old farmstead set in the beautiful unspoiled area of Mid Devon. It is a collection of old and more recent farm buildings with an ancient farmhouse and barn conversion now used for holidays. Details of the house at Lower Chilverton can be found in several books because of its historical architectural interest. The roof timbers have been dated between the 1300’s and 1480 using dendrochronology. It is listed as grade 2* and originally was a medieval hall house with no external fireplaces, no stairs so no upstairs rooms. A fire would be used in the centre of the main room of the house and the smoke would escape through the thatched roof. The underside of the current thatch still shows the smoke blackening. The large barn on the lane is thought to be around 1500-1525 and served the farm and its animals.
